(ATR) An official with the Almaty 2011 Asian Games was found to have embezzled more than $3 million from the event’s budget.
Kazakh news outlet TengriNews reported on Monday that a court in Almaty found Aidar Musin, head of broadcasting and media services for the games, was found guilty of fraud and illegal behavior in an entrepreneurial activity.
A spokesperson for the court said Musin was found to have misappropriated some 600 million Kazakh tenge ($3.3 million) that was allocated for construction on the games’ ski jumping venue. Instead, the money was spent on a BMW, Mercedes-Benz or other personal expenses.
Musin has the option to appeal the ruling, which will carry a five-and-a-half year prison sentence and a four-year ban on holding public office.
In its most recent Corruption Perceptions Index, Transparency International ranked Kazakhstan 144 out of 170 countries. Overall, transparency scores for the Central Asian countries were poor.
Almaty is bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Beijing is the other 2022 bid city.
