(ATR) The new president of the World Anti-Doping Agency has a big job ahead to ensure all members of the Olympic Movement are up to speed with the revamped WADA Code.
The 72-year-old British IOC member in Scotland has risen to one of the top jobs in world sport after 14 years at WADA.With such experience and his strong links with the IOC, NOCs and international federations, he will endeavor to encourage swift compliance with the code as WADA steps up the fight against doping. Four-year bans for drug cheats, which will force tainted athletes to miss an Olympics, mark WADA’s more aggressive stance when the code kicks in in 2015.
One of Reedie’s tasks is to find new sources of finance for WADA to fund the battle against dopers. The Sochi Olympics provides the first test of his WADA leadership; he will be asked to comment on doping controversies. Among other items in 2014, he’ll be keeping a very close eye on developments around anti-doping in Jamaica and the UCI’s next steps in bringing disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong to speak to an independent commission.
Away from WADA, Reedie, an IOC vice president until 2016, has important roles on IOC commissions. He’ll be busy on the marketing, Olympic program and ethics panels. An IOC member since 1994, he chaired the evaluation commission for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
