FIBT World Championship Begins

The International Bobsleigh and Tobogganing Federation's World Championship kicked off Feb. 11 with training runs on the track in Altenberg, Germany. Competition will begin on Feb. 15 and run until Feb. 24. Altenberg officials expect 50,000 spectators to cheer on 223 athletes from 20 nations.

The title sponsor is Bauhaus home improvement stores. Ostsachsische Sparkasse Dresden bank and Konica Minolta also are top sonsors.

Altenberg hosted the World Championship in 1991 and 2000. The track, completed in 1986, is considered one of the toughest in the world with a maximum grade of 15 percent and vertical drop of more than 122 meters. Four refrigeration condensors can keep the track frozen in temperatures as high as 68 degrees.

The FIBT World Cup, a series of eight events from November until February, just wrapped up with Germany dominating the medals podium.

Speed Skating Championship Ends

The International Skating Union World Allround Speed Skating Championships took place Feb 9-10 in Berlin, Germany. The event sold out the 10,000-seat Sportforum Hohenschönhausen. Dutch skaters Sven Kramer and Paulien van Deutekom took the men's and women's gold. It was Kramer's second consecutive title and Van Deutekom's first.

The Championship determines only the best allround speed skater and has no bearing on the ISU World Cup standings.

Norway Wins Wheelchair Curling

Norway repeated as gold medalists, beating South Korea at the Feb. 9 finals of the World Wheelchair Curling Championships in Sursee, Switzerland. Ten teams began the tournament on Feb. 1. A video wrapup for the event will be posted on www.paralympicsport.tv.
