The Olympic torch relay has reached the top of Mount Everest.

The feat was shown on live TV, a team of Chinese climbers with the torch and flags of China and the Olympics standing at the peak of the world’s tallest mountain.

A team of 19 climbers made the final assault of the mountain beginning before dawn. The last trek to the summit took six hours, according to reports from Chinese media.

A special canister held the Olympic flame for the ascent, which was used to kindle the torch at the peak.

"We have lit the torch on top of the world," are the words of one of the five torchbearers. The last torchbearer is identified as a Tibetan woman.

The flame for the Everest climb is a separate one from the flame being used for the rest of the Olympic torch relay, now traveling through southern China.

The flame from Everest is to be re-united with the torch relay flame when the route reaches Tibet next month.
