Sandra Cuevas invited Claudia Sheinbaum to collaborate to preserve Palma from Paseo de la Reforma

La Palma will be withdrawn this Sunday after being affected by a fungus that does not allow it to nourish well, so they will pay tribute to the old specimen

The ancient palm tree of La Glorieta de la Palma, located on Paseo de la Reforma, will be removed on the afternoon of this Sunday 24th, leaving the city without another of its symbols that have managed to overcome the onslaught of time, and why not, of people.

This is because, as reported in recent days by the Ministry of the Environment (Sedema), the palm had to be replaced and taken to the Nezahualcoyotl Nursery where it will receive treatment and later it will be operated on by young artists in order to have it placed somewhere in Mexico City.

This caused the sadness and anger of the capital's inhabitants because the iconic palm has been in that place for about 100 years. It was put at the end of the porfiriato and the beginning of the Mexican Revolution to adorn the Glorieta and remained there to this day.

Although the head of government, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum, will pay tribute to La Palma a few hours after her retirement, the mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Sandra Cuevas Nieves, called for collaboration to achieve the preservation of the specimen.

Through a video posted on her social networks, the mayor went to the roundabout located in Paseo de la Reforma and Nice to talk about the importance of the palm tree and invite the head of government to work together.

I find myself admiring this tribute to nature, a roundabout that dates back to 1865 and where we can look for the photographs of this palm,” which, he explained, has been registered since 1920, “the first photograph”.

It should be noted that the palm will be removed this April 24 due to an affection by a fungus that has left it in poor condition. According to Claudia Sheinbaum's explanations, the experts consulted recommended that it be removed from space to be replaced.

“This space is a tribute to nature”, so “I want to extend an invitation to the head of government, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, to work in coordination: Government of the Cuauhtémoc Mayor's Office, but also and even more importantly” with experts.

He added that “neglect is not only with this palm, there are many avenues that are already dry” and forgotten, so he asked that the negative not be allowed to advance. So he called to meet with those who “really know” to preserve the natural heritage

The analyzes carried out revealed the presence of fungi, one of which is associated with pink palm rot. According to experts, this fungus causes a plugging that prevents water from circulating along the trunk.
