During the Easter holiday period, the country's beaches become one of the busiest tourist destinations to visit. However, there are sometimes incidents that threaten the physical integrity of tourists, such as what happened in Acapulco last Wednesday, April 13, when a couple of travelers were rescued from a beach due to the risk of drowning.
According to local media, two tourists from Mexico City were vacationing on El Morro beach, in Acapulco, Guerrero. On Wednesday afternoon, the bathers were out to sea, but little by little the waves pushed them inland to the point where they could no longer return on their own.
Other visitors who were on the beach informed the lifeguards to assist the tourists. Immediately, the staff of the Promotora de Playas went to the requested point and entered the sea to rescue the two people with the help of a rope and a life ring.
A video that began to circulate on social networks shows the moment when the rescuers, identified as Iván Gallardo and Érick Álvarez, run into the deep waters while one woman is heard exclaiming: “It's taken two! Run, run!” Meanwhile, another tourist commented that moments earlier they had already saved one of the bathers.
After about a minute, one of the lifeguards leaves with the other tourist under his shelter, while the spectators who were on the seashore began to applaud to recognize the rescue work carried out by beach personnel. The rescued tourists received medical attention on the beach and so far no subsequent damage has been reported.
It should be noted on Tuesday, April 12, the Beach Promoter and Administrator delivered torpedoes to State Civil Protection lifeguards for water rescue on the coast of Guerrero, as a safety measure during this Easter holiday period, commented Amilcar Trujillo, regional coordinator of PC.
He also commented that around 41 rescues have been carried out in the revolcadero area: 19 on Sunday, April 10 and 22 on Monday, April 11; there are no records of deceased persons so far.
Previously, the Ministry of Civil Protection of the State of Guerrero, together with the Ministry of the Navy, had announced that the phenomenon known as “Sea of the background” would occur from April 13 to 15 on the coast of the entity, which could cause a high wave of up to 2.4 meters high along the entire coastline guerrerense.
In this regard, they recommended to the general population and tourists not to enter the sea, not to engage in water sports, to abide by the signs of the lifeguards in the area, as well as the placing of red banners on the beaches to remind bathers that they do not go into the sea.
According to the National Center for Disaster Prevention, the phenomenon of the sea in the background is generated “by the action of the wind of storms on the sea” and occurs on the Pacific coast, mainly affecting Guerrero, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Michoacán, Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit and Baja California Sur.
