After the successful departure of Juan Carlos Osorio from América de Cali, the club made official the return of Alexandre Guimares, a Brazilian coach who led the vallecaucano team in 2019 and won the Colombian League. A coach who excites the fans of the 'Red Devils' and with whom they hope to regain their good time in the local competition. The moment of the club is not the best and the managers are betting on the connection that the Brazilian has with some of the key pieces of the team.

This is the second time that Alexandre Guimaraes will lead América de Cali and it is the second time he has replaced Juan Carlos Osorio, the first time was in 2021 at Atlético Nacional and now he does so at the vallecaucano club. The coach receives a team that has not been able to consolidate but with a sense of mind after the last victory against Millonarios. On his return, he will have to adapt quickly to the team as next Sunday, April 10, they will face Atlético Nacional in Medellin, a game in which much more than three points are played.

America de Cali is in the 12th place of the BetPlay League standings with 18 points and is three points behind Envigado who is eighth, while Atlético Nacional, its next rival, is the leader of the standings with 30 points. Five games won, three tied and six lost, are the balance that the Brazilian coach finds to play the remainder of the season. America scored 16 goals, but scored 17, something Guimaraes will also have to work on in the final stage of the competition.

In the 2019 season America started with Fernando 'El Pecoso' Castro on the bench, who had the duty to return the Red Devils to be the protagonists of the local contest, however, the start was not the best. He fell in a friendly tournament against Santa Fe and Millonarios, while in the Colombian League, they got off to a good start, but on the 12th date, three consecutive defeats led the managers to make the decision to fire the coach. The team came under the command of Jersson Gonzales who ranked them into the eight, but was eliminated.

After this situation, Alexandre Guimaraes came to the bench of América de Cali to try to improve what was done in the Apertura Tournament. The Brazilian led the team to qualify for the home runs, where he qualified for the grand final after winning four games and losing two. Finally he faced Junior de Barranquilla, two-time champion of the contest, in the first leg he tied 0-0 at the Metropolitano de Barranquilla and then won the Pascual Guerrero 2-0, thus winning the 14th star after eleven years. Guimaraes became the first Brazilian coach to be champion in Colombia.

In 2020, the pandemic affected sports competitions and clubs, the break of several months ended up leading the club's managers to finish the Guimaraes sports process. Tulio Gómez himself explained that there was no money to extend the contractual relationship with the coach, so he made the decision to end the cycle, something that did not go well among the scarlet fans.

In an interview for Win Sports, Guimaraes said that, “It's a strange feeling because usually in this profession when you leave a team it's because almost always the results don't accompany. This stage in America professionally, despite this situation that we did not expect, I think we can say that the work is done because we have achieved an identification for America towards all football media.

Although the squad has changed in recent years, there are still players on the squad who have already worked with the Brazilian coach and know his methods, such as Marlos Torres, one of the team's leaders, who was in that 2019 champion team against Junior from Barranquilla, as well as Carlos Sierra, Luis Alejandro Paz, Luis Sánchez and Gustavo Carvajal.
