The United States will seek Russia's suspension from the UN Human Rights Council after the massacre in Bucha, US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield announced Monday.
“In close coordination with Ukraine and other UN member states and partners, the United States will seek Russia's suspension from the UN Human Rights Council,” the ambassador said on Twitter.
“140 Member States have already voted to condemn Russia for its unprovoked war and the humanitarian crisis it has unleashed. My message to those 140 countries: the images of Bucha and the devastation in Ukraine force us to combine our words with action.”
“We cannot allow a Member State that is subverting all the principles we hold dear to continue to participate in the Human Rights Council,” he added. “Russia should not have a position of authority in that body, nor should we allow Russia to use its seat in the Council as a propaganda tool to suggest that it has a legitimate concern for human rights.”
