It's hard for most users not to intuitively believe what they're seeing or listening to. However, since it is possible to manipulate photos, videos and audios with relatively little effort and experience, it is recommended to be attentive.

So-called “deepfakes” are created with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) and, when viewed or listened to normally, they can hardly be distinguished from real videos or voice recordings, warns the German Federal Office for Security in Information Technology (BSI), which offers a new thematic page on the which explains the technology, procedures, hazards and how to protect yourself.

Counterfeits are called “deepfakes”, because the methods used to create them are based on deep neural networks.

How to protect yourself from these manipulated files? The mere fact of knowing its existence and the possibilities of AI leads us to stop blindly trusting the authenticity of any video or audio recording itself. It is always important to critically question certain claims and their plausibility.

There may also be technical evidence to expose counterfeits. According to the BSI, these may be artifacts in facial transitions, blurred outlines, lack of facial expressions or inconsistent exposure in videos. A metallic or monotonous sound, an incorrect pronunciation or an artificial way of speaking, as well as unnatural noises or delays, are typical errors of voice falsifications.

According to the BSE, there could also be cryptographic procedures in the future that clearly link the source of video or audio material to an identity and thus allow counterfeiting to be avoided. These also include numerous methods for the automatic detection of manipulated data that are currently the subject of studies by the community of scientists, say the entity's experts.
