Peru vs Paraguay: A triumph for the national team could change the lives of Peruvians

If on a double date the Peruvian national team wins six points, the president's approval can rise to three points, according to economic researcher Hugo Ñopo.

This Tuesday, March 29, millions of Peruvians will be watching Peru vs Paraguay that will be played at 6:30 p.m. at the National Stadium in Lima. This is the last chance of the national team to qualify for a repechage and continue to aspire to participate in the Qatar 2022 World Cup. But a victory for the team led by Ricardo Gareca will not only bring happiness to the fans, but would also have some impact on other habits of Peruvian life such as the economy and even politics.

HOW DOES A WIN CHANGE?

Economic researcher Hugo Ñopo, author of the book The Goal Formula, points out that football has an impact on our mood, but also on more concrete variables such as economics and politics.

When a national team is doing well, presidential approval goes up. This is something that we have measured statistically in the book,” he said in the Latina program, Buenas Nuevas Malas Nuevas Nuevas.

If on a double date a team was successful and won six points, the presidential approval could rise to three points, which is to rise above the margin of error”, he added.

He explained that this change involves the optimism that people can feel and with the idea of seeing themselves winners.

However, he said that this phenomenon occurs in countries with the football level such as Peru, with a team that does not always win and creates room for excitement. On the other hand, in countries like Brazil or Argentina, more accustomed to football triumphs, this does not happen with the same impact.

ECONOMIC CHANGES

In the case of the economy, Hugo Ñopo recalled that when Peru qualified Russia 2018, the white and red fabric ended in Gamarra, due to the demand for garments in the colors of the selection. Something similar happened with televisions, which showed a significant increase in sales. There was also more food and drink consumption in the months close to the ranking. This would have led to GDP increasing by up to one point more than expected.

However, he indicated that not everything ends up being good. He pointed out that, during the time of the world cup, Peruvians became less productive, perhaps because of having football more time in their heads. This led to a subsequent decline in the economy.

Despite this, he considered that situations such as these should be used to generate national identity and unity.

PERUVIANS BET

On the other hand, in 2020, the sports betting market in Peru has had a search growth of 128% compared to 2019, 90% of bets correspond to the predilection for football.

According to a visibility study conducted by Attach, a digital business consultant, in September 20219 more than 2 million Peruvians sought to participate in sports betting.

The figure increased in 2020 to over 5 million. This trend has evolved in the context of the pandemic, allowing searches to quadruple in a year.
