Barcelona, 24 Mar Spanish driver Nani Roma, winner of the Dakar rally in both cars and motorcycles, announced this Thursday in a statement that he suffers from a “treatable and with a good prognosis” bladder tumor. “I am Nani Roma and I wanted to inform you that I have been detected with a treatable cancer with a good prognosis. I am well and encouraged, being aware that after facing many challenges, I must now focus on the most important of them all,” explains the Barcelona pilot, who will undergo chemotherapy treatment at the Vall d'Hebron hospital. According to the statement, Rome, 50, went to the doctor a few days ago suffering from “unusual” back pain, underwent various tests and that was when the tumor was detected. “On March 11, Nani Roma underwent transurethral resection of a bladder injury at the Dexeus University Hospital in Barcelona. Although it is rare for a young, healthy, non-smoker person to develop a bladder tumor, the findings of radiological tests and histological studies confirmed the presence of a neoplastic lesion,” explains Dr. José Placer. After the diagnosis, the pilot from Folgueroles (Barcelona) will begin chemotherapy treatment at the Vall d'Hebron Hospital in Barcelona. Doctors Joan Carles Galcerán, a specialist in oncology, and Albert Carrión, a specialist in urology, will monitor the disease that, according to Roma, is “unusual” for his “condition and age”. In any case, the pilot points out that the diagnosis of the medical team “is good” and that, after treatment, a new operation and recovery period, he hopes to “return to the seat” of his Hunter “more eager than ever”. The driver, who must be away from the competition “one season” that is still indefinite, is developing, together with his coach and the doctors of the CAR de Sant Cugat, a training and nutrition plan to maintain strength and motivation during this period of inactivity. “Unfortunately, life sometimes gives us unpleasant surprises, but I know that I am surrounded by the best family and friends,” concludes Roma, who hopes to share “good news very soon”.
