Mexico City, 23 Mar With the aim of making better use of the marine shrimp species and sustainable and environmentally friendly fisheries, the Government of Mexico established this Wednesday the start of the temporary closure of the species and the lagoon-estuarine systems of the ocean's coastlines Pacific and Gulf of California. In a statement, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader), through the National Commission for Aquaculture and Fisheries (Conapesca), indicated that the Agreement published in the Official Journal of the Federation (DOF) indicates that, as of 23:00 on March 23, 2022 (05.00 GMT on Thursday, March 24) the closure of all shrimp species. This is on the coast of the Pacific Ocean and in waters under federal jurisdiction of lagoons, estuarines, marshes and bays from the border with the United States, including the Gulf of California, to the border with the Republic of Guatemala. “The measure is applied based on the technical study carried out by the National Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Inapesca),” the report said. In addition, Conapesca called on fishermen from the high seas and riparian or small vessels to “respect the dates and zones of restriction of shrimp catches in order to promote the development of the sector”. This is to make better use of the species in the next 2022-2023 catching season and contribute to the welfare of the more than 250,000 people and more than 60,000 families that support this commercial fishery of great economic and social relevance to the country. He also called on the production chain of this fishing industry to remain united, together with the authorities, to support the certification of Mexican shrimp to the United States and to keep an eye on the 2022 calendar of training and awareness courses on the construction, installation and proper use of sea turtle excluders. The Shrimp Ban Agreement entered into force on the day of its publication in the DOF, and sustainable monitoring of its compliance will be carried out by Conapesca, in coordination with the Secretariat of the Navy.
