Nadal suffers injury to his ribs, he will stop 4-6 weeks

MADRID (AP) — Rafael Nadal will have to be out of activity for between four and six weeks due to a rib injury, which compromises his set-up for the French Open in two months.

Nadal reported on Tuesday that he underwent medical tests after arriving in his native Spain from the United States, and the results detected a fissure in one of his ribs on his left side.

The current world number three suffered the injury in the semifinals of the Indian Wells Open against compatriot Carlos Alcaraz on Saturday. Nadal succumbed in the final to Taylor Fritz in two sets on Sunday.

“It's not good news and I didn't expect this,” Nadal wrote on Twitter. “I'm sunk and sad because after the start of the season I've had so good.”

Nadal started the year 20-0, including his consecration at the Australian Open, until he lost 6-3, 7-6 (5) to Fritz in the tournament on hard surfaces in the California desert. It was the third best start to the season since 1990 on the ATP Tour. Nadal also won titles in Melbourne and Acapulco.

He won his 21st Grand Slam title in Australia and was the absolute owner of the all-time record among the men, breaking the tie he had with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

“I was coming to a very important part of the year with very good feelings and good results,” Nadal said. “But hey, I've always had that spirit of struggle and improvement and what I will do is have patience and work hard after my recovery. Once again thank everyone for their support.”
