LISBON (AP) — Veteran defender Pepe was ruled out to play Portugal's match against Turkey in the European World Cup playoff after testing positive for COVID-19 on Monday.

The Portuguese football federation reported that Pepe is isolated and that Tiago Djaló, from the French club Lille, was called as his substitute for Thursday's engagement in Porto.

It was not clear whether Pepe, 39 years old and FC Porto player, would be able to play in the second match of the repechage should Portugal eliminate Turkey.

Nor will Portugal coach Fernando Santos be able to count on injured Rúben Dias, the other starting central defender on the team.

In addition, the steering wheel Rúben Neves will not be able to play due to an injury.
