Five bodies were found this Saturday in a residential area of the Mexican resort of Cancun, with coasts in the Caribbean, the regional prosecutor's office reported.

“5 dead bodies, all male” were located in a garden in the Paraíso Villas neighborhood of Cancun, reported the prosecutor's office of the state of Quintana Roo, where the spa is located.

The location of the bodies was the result of interviews with 11 people arrested last Friday, the agency added in a statement.

According to newspaper versions, they are part of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

Quintana Roo's forensic service works on the identification of victims, among which could be a Mexican businessman kidnapped in December 2021, the institution said.

Cancun and the nearby Caribbean resorts are some of the favorite destinations in Mexico among international tourists.

However, they have been shaken by various violent acts for several years. Just last weekend a British businessman living in Playa del Carmen was shot and killed.

While on January 21, two Canadians were killed and another was injured in a shooting at a hotel complex near Cancun.

The Quintana Roo prosecutor's office has pointed out that most of these crimes are related to retail drug sales or extortion.

Mexican drug traffickers often bury their victims in clandestine graves to hinder investigations against them.

Since December 2006, when the federal government launched a controversial military anti-drug operation, Mexico has recorded more than 340,000 violent deaths, according to authorities, attributing most of the murders to organized crime.
