The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) carried out an operation at the Chapultepec Zoo, in Mexico City, after the death of two specimens of Mexican gray wolf, a species considered to be in danger of extinction, was reported.

Since March 13, it was reported that two puppies of this species died due to apparent acute renal failure, however, environmental authorities of Profepa treated this case until the 17th.

The Secretariat of the Environment of Mexico City (SEDEMA) reported that after the death of these two puppies, the rest of the litter was transferred to a clinic for medical evaluation, but until today it has not reported the health status of the specimens treated and whether they are out of danger.

The two cubs, one female and one male, were born in 2021 and were children of Seje and Rhi, a pair of wolves who consider themselves an ambassador for the conservation of their species.

The death of these two specimens of Mexican wolves was recorded last Saturday, when zoo workers discovered that one of them had no movement. Veterinary doctors arrived at the biome of arid and desert areas, and together with the caregivers they entered the shelter where they found that he had no vital signs. Inside the burrow they discovered a second corpse.

Because of this situation, Profepa inspectors arrived around noon on Thursday to review the facilities of the wolves, in addition to requesting logs on the care they received in recent weeks. After this visit, the zoo administration has 5 working days to submit the documentation it has pending for this case.

To date, eight litters of Mexican wolves have been born in the Chapultepec Zoo, a species that was recently reclassified from the category “Probably extinct in the wild” to “Endangered”.

After this incident, the Chapultepec Zoo stated that they will continue to work on the conservation of this species that is in danger of extinction.

Once Profepa issues the opinion, the remains of the two specimens of the Mexican gray wolf that lost their lives, either through burial or incineration, can be given final destination.

Environmental authorities from Mexico City reported that on February 21, the birth of a California Condor was recorded at the Chapultepec Zoo.

The General Directorate of Zoos and Wildlife Conservation indicated that this condor breeding is the tenth born under the program of ex situ reproduction (outside its place of origin) of this species in zoos.

Tiger rescued in Chimalhuacán

On March 12, Profepa personnel responded to a citizen complaint in Chimalhuacán, State of Mexico, and rescued a copy of Tigre that remained in conditions of abandonment.

The copy was peeking out the window of a building, so neighbors gave notice to the authorities. Profepa staff, in coordination with the municipal police, went to the indicated home and found that the tiger was in abusive conditions.
