The first plane with humanitarian aid for Ukrainian refugees will leave tonight from Ezeiza for Poland. It will include two and a half tons of materials donated by White Helmets together with the Ukrainian community in Argentina.
The dispatched load includes, among other essential supplies for aid, 780 blankets of different sizes; 130 cots and 100 fully equipped first aid kits. These materials respond to the queries that, from Argentina, were made to the Ukrainian and Polish authorities regarding the current needs for refugees.
Aerolineas Argentinas Flight 1302 will depart at 23.30 and will go to Miami airport in the United States. There, in another aircraft of the Polish airline LOT, the supplies will be carried to Polish territory. According to the Argentine Foreign Ministry, these first shipments leaving Argentina will be delivered on Monday, 21, to the Government Agency for Strategic Reserves of Poland, which concentrates the logistics of international donations.
White Helmets - the body under the Argentine Foreign Ministry headed by Santiago Cafiero - together with the Ukrainian community in Argentina collected much of this burden to assist refugees who are victims of the war on Ukrainian territory. It is estimated that more than three million people left Ukraine since the beginning of the war, fleeing to neighboring countries, such as Poland, Romania or Moldova.
For this reason, at the door of the embassy of the country that was invaded by Russian troops on February 24, in the neighborhood of Palermo (Olleros 2169), for several days the population was called upon to donate items that were received at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral “Santa Maria del Patrocinio”, located at 3960 Ramón L. Falcón street, Flores.
Humanitarian aid from the body chaired by Sabina Frederic is already in the export cargo terminal of Pistarini Airport. The articulation of this work was planned during the meeting held on Monday, March 14, by the head of the White Helmets, the authorities of the Ukrainian Embassy in Argentina and those of the Federation of Ukrainian Communities, who also actively collaborated in collecting donations. The Ukrainian embassy will also continue to gather aid. They ask for non-perishable food, pet food, diapers, baby food, and first aid items such as alcohol, gauze, hydrogen peroxide, and other medicines.
A delegation from White Helmets traveled to Poland earlier this month. The seven members of the team, led by Esteban Chalá, arrived on Friday, March 4, in Warsaw, the Polish capital. The first activity was to meet with the Argentine Ambassador to that country, Ana María Ramírez. They carried out an analysis of the state of the war conflict: from the Russian attack on the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant, described by the UN as “unacceptable and highly irresponsible”; to the Ukrainian accusation against Vladimir Putin's forces of breaching the ceasefire and halting the evacuation of civilians in the besieged city of Mariupol.
One of the main activities they carried out was assistance to the Argentines who fled Ukraine, which so far number 110. They also had the collaboration of the ambassador to that country, Elena Mikusinski, who on February 24, together with her daughter and Consul Yusef Saber, had to leave the diplomatic headquarters in Kiev, the Ukrainian capital, in the face of the intensity of the bombing.
At the same time, White Helmets was collecting data on the situation of citizens of countries belonging to the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and that are in the region to collaborate with the needs they have already expressed and that exceed the material capacity of consular personnel in that country. Argentina has been chairing CELAC since January of this year.
