Former tennis player Alex Dolgopolov announced today that he will return to Ukraine to join his country's army in the fight against a Russian invasion. In his latest statements, he said that he received training in the handling of firearms.

Dolgopolov, who won three ATP titles and became number 13 in the world during his career, used his social networks to break the news. “The war caught me in Turkey, and I arrive there the day before the war, with my sister and mother. I've been practicing shooting and I've been lucky to have a professional soldier teach me for a few days. I'm comfortable with guns, I could hit my head five times,” wrote the former tennis player.

“We brought some bulletproof vests for ourselves and the army, flew to Zagreb, bought everything we needed, traveled around Europe, entered Ukraine through Poland and ended up in Kiev,” summed up the former tennis player who today wields a gun instead of a racket.

This is not the only case where Ukrainian professional athletes had to change their daily lives to defend their country.

“This is my home and we are going to defend it. With all the people who stayed here! I have great respect for everyone and I am very proud of how the country is united under so much pressure from a mad dictator.”
