A skeleton found in a house on the tourist island of Bali belongs to the remains of an elderly Spanish man, who was seen at the scene more than six years ago, Indonesian police reported Friday.

The man's identity was confirmed after the hospital in the provincial capital, Denpasar, carried out a series of analyses of the bones, following the discovery of the remains this week by an Indonesian individual claiming to be his adopted son.

“It has been confirmed that the skeleton belongs to a foreigner from Spain, Mario Llobet Esteban,” Police Chief I Ketut Sugiarta Yoga told AFP, stating that the man was born in 1945.

The remains were found on Monday when Anang Firdaus, who had not been in contact with the man for years, went to his rented house in Badung district.

For now it is not clear whether Firdaus was formally adopted by Stephen or whether it was a close relationship.

The skeleton was found in a bed in a locked house. The cause of death had not yet been established, but the police said there were no signs of violence.

At the moment, the Spanish consulate could not be reached.

Made Karta, who lived near Estaban, told police she last saw him six years ago. For him, the Spaniard had left the island because he returned to his country every year to renew his visa.
