Leon goes for the feat against Seattle Sounders; he has never eliminated an MLS team in Concacaf

Out of six championship appearances, they have never been able to win the title; three of the eliminations have been by American football clubs

León is on the verge of elimination in the 2022 Concacaf Champions League. The Guanajuatenses are in search of a feat like the one that the Pumas of UNAM did achieve in their series by coming back against New England. However, history plays against the Mexican team that has never been able to beat an American team in a single-elimination phase.

The team led by Argentina's Ariel Holan is close to being left out of the international tournament once again. After losing the first leg of the round of 16 to the Seattle Sounders by scoring three goals by zero, the Lion is obliged to achieve an equal result to at least tie the aggregate.

A task that goes from the difficult to the impossible, because in the history of the Green Panzas participating in Concacaf they have never been able to leave out a Major League Soccer club in the elimination stages. There are three antecedents: the first one dates back to the 1998 tournament when it faced DC United in the semifinals, which was able to beat him by two scores to zero.

The second is in 2020 when it became the only team in the Liga MX (out of four) that did not qualify for the quarterfinals at that time. In the round of 16, Leon started the series at home winning two times zero, but Los Angeles came up the score by scoring three goals in the second leg, already on US territory.

The third record is only a year ago. In 2021, it was again in the round of 16 that the emeralds were eliminated and also the only Aztec representative not to advance. This time for the Canadian Toronto (who belongs to the MLS) who gave him a loss of three to two in the overall result.

It is then, that the outlook for the Mexican team does not look favorable at all. In addition, the statistics are worse when it is extended to a balance sheet. In history, León has been able to play six Concacaf tournaments (between the Cup and League format), of which he has not been able to win any title. The closest he has been to a runner-up in 1993 when he finished second in the final round.

2021 Tournament: Eliminated in the Round of 16 against Toronto (Aggregate 2-3).

2020 Tournament: Eliminated in the round of 16 against Los Angeles (aggregate 2-3).

2014-15 tournament: eliminated in the group stage, behind Herediano (second in group seven).

1998 tournament: eliminated in the semifinals against DC United (only match 0-2).

1993 tournament: lost in the final round, finished second behind Saprissa (runner-up).

1973 tournament: eliminated in the semifinals against El Salvador's Eagle (aggregate 1-3).

With the minimum goal of achieving three scores, León seeks to overcome the series against Seattle Sounders and thus cut the historical statistics. If he succeeded, he will join Pumas and Cruz Azul who are already waiting in the run-up to the final. At stake is the hegemony that Mexican clubs have maintained in Concacaf, specifically during the last 16 years when only tricolors have been crowned champions.
