Guatemala City, 14 Mar The Government of Guatemala made official this Monday that it will start vaccinating children between 6 and 11 years old against covid-19 with doses of the US pharmaceutical company Moderna, after almost a year since the start of immunization in the Central American country. The Guatemalan Minister of Health, Francisco Coma, made the announcement with his team at a press conference at the National Palace of Culture, in the center of Guatemala City, after evaluating scientific studies on the subject. Coma explained that there are more than two million children between 6 and 11 years old in the territory and recalled that children between 12 and 17 years old have already been vaccinated against the pandemic for several months. “Both national and international scientific evidence was evaluated” to make that decision, the official said and specified that the vaccine that minors will receive is the US pharmaceutical company Moderna. The minister called on parents to take their children to be vaccinated against the virus, which appeared two years ago in Guatemala. CASES DESCEND Coma said that cases of the disease continue to decline in the Central American country and that despite the Catholic processions it has carried out with massive participation of people, there has been no increase in covid-19. “We are already seeing a decline in positive cases,” the official stressed. For his part, the head of the National Health Laboratory, César Conde, assured that only practically cases of omicron are detected in Guatemala, according to tests carried out in both the public and private spheres. Guatemala is the country with the most deaths from covid-19 in Central America, with a total of 17,159 officially reported deaths and 805,393 positive cases of the disease. With regard to vaccination, the country presided over by Alejandro Giammattei has one of the lowest rates on the continent, since only 5.8 million people of the 18 million living in the territory have been immunized with at least two doses.
