Ferenc Liszt International Airport is one of the busiest in Europe and one of the fastest growing. Traffic is up 12%year on year and new cargo agreements with operators such as Qatar Airways are establishing Budapest Airport as a regional hub equipped to serve the country and the region for decades to come.
Plans for the further development of Budapest Airport advanced this week with the announcement of a new HUF50bn (EUR160 million) passenger terminal designed to accommodate the forecast increase in passenger traffic –expected to be more than 18 million by 2021. The terminal will feature a significant increase in check-in desks, more parking spaces and state of the art security facilities.
The expansion plan will also include a direct rail link to Budapest city allowing tourists and business people alike a quick efficient journey with effective links to other cities around the country. A hotel will cater for transit passengers – indicating a clear pathway for local carrier, Wizz Air, to continue to expand its routes and for other carriers to use Budapest as a transit hub.
The Budapest 2024 Bid Chairman, Balázs Fürjes congratulated the operator, Budapest Airport, on its ambitions. "This is a very important step forward for Budapest and for Hungary. It is a leap forward too for the Budapest 2024 Bid. The new terminal and rail link to Budapest will be completed in time for the 2024 Games. This demonstrates our collective readiness to create a great spectator experience in Budapest at Games Time. We have a solid track record of building great facilities – from award-winning metro stations to outstanding new sports stadia – and our plans for the development of Budapest and for the hosting of the Games go hand in hand as we develop the infrastructure of the city."
