(ATR) Tokyo’s proposed sailing venue could be moved to a venue across Tokyo Bay.
A report in The Yomiuri Shimbun cites sources within the Tokyo Metropolitan Government saying the Wakasu Olympic Marina is too close to Haneda International Airport. Upon review of the plans, it was determined the venue is too close to the "extended approach zone" for the airport, says the paper.
Broadcasting and photography of the sailing event requires the use of helicopters, and the paper says their flights could disrupt flight plans at the airport.
Inage Yacht Harbor is reportedly the leading candidate for the alternate site. The location in Chiba is about a 50km ride around Tokyo Bay to its eastern shore, directly across from Tokyo, 10km
Tokyo 2020 could not be immediately reached for comment by Around the Ringsregarding the possible venue change.
At such a distance from Tokyo and the Olympic Village, housing for 1000+ athletes, coaches, officials and media will be a consideration. Approval by ISAF, the International Sailing Federation, would be a must.
Venue changes for a host after their selection is a typical process for an Olympic host city.
Suggestions have already surfaced that basketball and other sports could move to Saitama, about an hour north of Tokyo.
During the first IOC Coordination Commission visit to Tokyo in June, the IOC declined to say any specific venue changes were being discussed.
"Nothing has been put to us in that regard," Coordination Commission chairman John Coates said at the time.
"We are having a general discussion at the moment. Yes, it was an important factor for all of us, the compactness of the Games."
