
(ATR)On Feb. 22, more than 30,000 runners will participate in the Tokyo Marathon.
Sixty-four police officers equipped with cameras, cellphones, and riot gear will also run in the marathon, according to The Asahi Shimbun.
This is the first time the capital has taken such steps to strengthen security at the Tokyo Marathon. The efforts are part of Tokyo's preparations for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.
Almaty 2022
An IOC evaluation commission is wrapping up its visit to Almaty, Kazakhstan on Feb. 18.
The group arrived in Almaty on Feb. 14 to evaluate the city’s progress on its bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
ATREuropean editor Mark Bisson is in Almaty to cover the visit.
One of two cities--either Almaty or Beijing--will be chosen to host the 2022 Olympics at the IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur on July 31.
Rio Carnival
The second to last Carnival celebration before the 2016 Summer Olympics is underway in Rio.
The festival is held every year before Lent and is considered the biggest carnival in the world, with millions of people gathering in Rio.
A Samba Parade kicks off festivities on Feb. 16. The 2015 Rio Carnival ends Feb. 18.
Cricket World Cup
The 2015 Cricket World Cup is underway.
Jointly hosted this year by Australia and New Zealand, the event has gathered 14 teams from around the world. Overall, teams will play 49 matches in 14 venues.
India are the defending champions, having won the tournament in 2011.Competition ends March 29.
Celebrations in Lillehammer
Lillehammer is celebrating the one-year countdown to the second Winter Youth Olympic Games.
The 2016 Winter YOG will take place Feb. 12-21. Organizers say over 1,000 young athletes (ages 15-18) from 70 nations will compete in 70 medal events.
Magne Vikøren, head of marketing and communications for Lillehammer 2016, says public support will be "vital" over the next 361 days. He adds thatthe city hopes the Winter YOG will enhance its reputation on the international sports stage.
"Lillehammer hopes set its stamp as one of the best sporting destinations in the world."
