Karate Set for Inaugural European Games

(ATR) The World Karate Federation details their participation in the upcoming 2015 European Games.

(ATR) The Baku 2015 European Games will be the inaugural edition of the European Games, an international multi-sport event for athletes representing the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) of Europe. It will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 12 to 28 June 2015, and will feature over 6,000 athletes from 50 NOCs competing in 20 sports.

Karate is one of the sports represented. The best Karatekas in Europe are very proud to participate in this inaugural event. Karate is one of the fastest growing combat sports in the world. In Europe, there are approximately 1.5 million affiliated karateka in 50 countries, as in Europe 100% of the countries are members of the European Karate Federation

With this participation in the 1st European Games, the European karate family is proud and enthusiastic. By the participation in this event, Karate will already be present in a total of 8 major multi-sport events of the Olympic cycle. With energy and conviction, Karate is ready to be part of the Olympic family. Karate represents the Olympic values in sport: excellence, friendship and respect.

At the Baku 2015 European Games, the Karate competition will take place over two days on 13–14 June 2015 and consist of 10 individual Kumite events and 2 individual kata events. The best European athletes - 48 men and 48 women - will showcase their talents on the strikingly beautiful tatami of Crystal Hall. There are a total of 38 participating countries, which is a very high representation of the continent.

Men's categories: Kumite -60kg, -67kg, -75kg, -84kg, +84kg and kata

Women's categories: Kumite -50kg, -55kg, -61kg, -68kg, +68kg and kata

Qualification places were determined based on rankings during the 50th European Senior Championships (Istanbul, Turkey). Each category will have a total of 8 athletes. Six of them qualified among those who fought for a medal (gold / silver and bronze) in Istanbul, one place allocated to Azerbaijan as the host country and another one allocated according to universality criteria.
