At its first meeting in 2017, the Council of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) today prepared next steps for a number of important projects planned for this year.
Governance of International Federations (IFs) will remain at the top of ASOIF’s agenda, with all 28 Summer Olympic IFs recently having returned a self-assessment questionnaire. Read more about the process here. The evaluation of the questionnaire responses will be carried out during the next couple of weeks. On the basis of this evaluation, specific recommendations will then be made by the independent experts who are members of the ASOIF Governance Taskforce. A preliminary report outlining the general outcomes will be presented to all ASOIF members during the next General Assembly, to be held on 4 April 2017 in Aarhus, Denmark. Subsequently, ASOIF will work with each IF to prioritise and upgrade their respective governance model.
ASOIF President Francesco Ricci Bitti said on the occasion of today’s Council meeting: "I was happy to report that our governance project has been progressing significantly since we set up a dedicated Taskforce more than a year ago. This is thanks to the positive response and commitment of our member federations. In 2017, ASOIF will drive and support members to implement amendments or upgrades where necessary."
Council also discussed about the presentations of the three 2024 Olympic Games candidate cities of Budapest, Los Angeles and Paris to take place at the next General Assembly. Besides their general Games concepts, the three cities will explain the sport-specific aspects of their bids which will be of particular relevance for the Summer Olympic IFs. The 2024 host city will be elected at the IOC Session in Lima, Peru, in September.
Council received an update on the ongoing study into the essential day-to-day role that IFs play in governing their respective sports at a global level.
In regard to the newly created ASOIF Parasport Advisory Group (APAG), it was confirmed that the first meeting will take place on 16 February 2017. The group will be chaired by Tom Dielen, Secretary General of World Archery, and involve one representative of each of the 11 IFs governing the Paralympic side of their sport.
The next ASOIF Council meeting will be held on 2 April 2017 in Aarhus, Denmark.
