(SPOKANE, WASH.) – USA Boxing’s premier national championship event moved in to day two on Tuesday at the HUB Sports Center in Spokane, Wash. The day’s action began with a full slate of bouts in the bantamweight, lightweight and heavyweight divisions before the welterweight class took center stage in evening competition.
The first big upset of the tournament came in the first round of light welterweight action on Tuesday afternoon. Rahim Gonzales (Sylmar, Calif.) defeated reigning champion Abraham Nova (Albany, N.Y.) in the tournament opener for both boxers. Gonzales won a 2-1 decision over Nova to eliminate the 2015 gold medalist from the tournament.
The light welterweight division produced the first knockout of the tournament as well. 2012 Olympic Trials participant Luis Feliciano (Milwaukee, Wis.) moved one win closer to his second Olympic qualifying tournament with a second round knockout over Jabari Gregory (Charlotte N.C.). Feliciano hit Gregory with a right hand, uppercut combination and the shots ended the bout at the 2:34 mark of the second round.
Two-time national champion Jose Alday (Odessa, Texas) kicked off the evening session in a welterweight match-up with Vardges Vardanyan (Panorama City, Calif.). Vardanyan wasn’t intimidated by the returning titlist and the two faced off in a hard-fought, three-round battle. Alday pulled out a split decision victory in his 2015 tournament opener to move on to Wednesday’s competition.
Tory Williams (Mandeville, La.) won the lone light heavyweight bout of the day, taking a split decision win over Duane Johnson (Omaha, Neb.) in their second straight opening round match-up.
WBO Lightweight Champion and 2014 HBO and ESPN Fighter of the Year Terence Crawford (Omaha, Neb.) traveled to Spokane and his amateur roots for the 2015 tournament and he got the chance to share some inspiration with a special group of young people during his time in Washington state. Crawford spoke to youngsters from the HUB 360 program prior to the evening session about his road to the top of the sport and the importance of chasing your goals in life. The program is geared to middle school students from the Central Valley School District and the sixth-eighth grade students enjoy the opportunity to hear from community leaders and success stories from all walks of life.
Women’s action will begin on Wednesday with bouts in the flyweight and lightweight divisions being contested in the evening session. Preliminary competition will continue on Wednesday at noon and 5 p.m. on Wednesday at the HUB Sports Center.
