Chinese Lifters Pick Up Pile of Gold

More than 630 athletes met in the Chiang Mai Sports Complex in northern Thailand for the premier annual event in weightlifting.

In the women's seven weight classes, the top ranks shaped up to a contest dominated by China and Russia. China took five overall golds and two silvers – the medals awarded for combined snatch and clean and jerk scores. Russian lifters took five overall medals. South Korea finished the top tier with a gold and a bronze. Just seven federations shared the 21 women's medals.

The medals on the men's side were more broadly distributed, but still featured a strong showing from China. Five medals including two golds went to the Chinese men. Russia and Bulgaria each took three of the twenty-four medals.

Each of the mens' and womens' weight classes contested in Chiang Mai are on the schedule for Beijing. The first modern Olympic program featured men's weightlifting in 1896; women joined in 2000. Athletes may qualify for the 2008 Games by combined scores in the last two World Championships, continental championships, IWF Grand Prix events, or nomination by a technical committee.

Lifters from Myanmar and Kazakhstan were banned from competition for two years for tampering with their urine samples in Chiang Mai, IWF president Tamas Ajan announced.

At the annual congress concurrent with the tournament, three national governing bodies officially joined the federation. Liberia, Malawi and Maldives bring IWF membership to 181 countries. The executive board also awarded the 2011 World Championships to Paris over Los Angeles by a 10-8 vote. The 2010 Junior World Championships will go to Plovdiv, Bulgaria and the 2011 edition to Callao, Peru.

Tournament sponsorships came exclusively from domestic companies and brands – Thai Airways the best-known among them.

The next IWF World Championships are scheduled for November 2009 in Goyang City, Korea.
