Three new COVID-19 cases in the Beijing metro area were detected on Wednesday. However officials seemed unconcerned as the positive tests stemmed from patients currently under quarantine protocols.

“The current pandemic situation in the capital is overall controllable and it’s headed in a good direction,” said Xu Hejian, a spokesman for the city government, at a daily press briefing. “Beijing is safe.”

Over the last month Chinese officials have used curfews and lockdowns coupled with massive testing to curtail the virus in the lead up to the inauguration of the Opening Ceremonies.

This week’s Chinese and Lunar New Year, usually massive celebrations throughout China, were scaled back as citizens were told to remain indoors and not make return trips to their native villages.

A total of 115 locally transmitted cases of COVID-19, including six cases of the highly contagious Omicron variant have been detected over the last month.

Chinese health officials have tested 2 million Beijing residents for COVID-19 less than two weeks before the start of the Winter Olympics, the Associated Press reported amid a small spike of around 40 confirmed cases since January 15.
