Ivo Ferriani adds another hat to his numerous roles and responsibilities having been elected as the new president of the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF).

Ferriani, an IOC Executive Board member and current president of both the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) and Association of International Olympic Winter Sports Federations (AIOWF), will begin a two-year term effective immediately.

Per the GAISF statutes and its stakeholder rotational principle, the nomination was mandated to come from AIOWF, so essentially Ferriani taking over his newest leadership role comes as no surprise.

”The COVID-19 pandemic has truly demonstrated how sport is a force for good. I am therefore proud to have this opportunity to work with the global sports community to promote the power of sport and to achieve our common goal of a better world through sport,” Ferriani said.

“I am very much looking forward to bringing my sporting experience to serve all GAISF’s members, associate members and observers, and to support them over the next two years.”

I am very honored to be elected as the president of GAISF,” said the former Italian bobsledder and 1988 Olympian.

Ferriani’s leadership roles within the Olympic movement have steadily increased over recent years - he has served as AIOWF president since 2020 and president of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation since 2010. The Italian sports leader from Turin has also been an IOC Executive Board Member since 2018.

Ferriani, who received the nod at Friday’s GAISF General Assembly, vows to bring the global sports community closer together for the benefit of the sporting world during continuing challenge due to the pandemic, while underlining how he aims to also use his role as a member of the IOC Sustainability and Legacy Commission to build on this progress.

Ferriani, who is also a member of the IOC Women in Sport Commission, Says he is committed to helping promote equal opportunities for girls and women in the global sports community to participate in, and benefit from sport.

In yet another of his myriad positions, Ferriani, a member of the IOC Athletes’ Entourage Commission plans to introduce new initiatives directly involving and benefitting athletes.

Ferriani’s schedule and responsibilities will only get busier over the weeks ahead with the Beijing 2022 Games just around the bend. His bobsled and skeleton athletes just completed a three-week training block and exhibition races at China’s new Olympic sliding track in Yanqing. Additionally, next week the IBSF World Cup season opens for athletes on the 1964 & 1976 Olympic track in Innsbruck.

As the new president of GAISF, Ferriani replaces fellow Italian, Raffaele Chiulli, who wished him the best while looking forward to continued cooperation with the umbrella sports organization.

”My heartfelt congratulations go to Ivo Ferriani on his election as the new President of GAISF,” Chiulli said. “I have no doubt he will continue to serve GAISF’s Members and all of sport to a high-level, and I can think of no better representative from the AIOWF family to lead GAISF for the next two years.”

”As the President of ARISF, and the representative of ARISF on the GAISF Council, I will have the pleasure of continuing to work closely with GAISF and its new President in the years ahead.”
