
The Sochi Olympic flame traveled approximately 360 miles west from Chita to the capital of theRepublic of Buryatia on Friday.
Sochi 2014 says more than 90 torchbearers ran with the torch as it made its way to Ulan-Ude, including Olympic archer Balzhinima Tsyempilovhails.
Ulan-Udeis home to the largest sculpture of Russian revolutionary figure Vladimir Lenin's head in the world.
Buddhist monks from Chita were on hand to bless the torch during its relay. Various Lamas from a temple in Chita presided over the torch relay while givingblue khadacks - long silk scarves - as gifts to the relay participants. The scarfs are symbols ofhospitality, sky, and longevity.
The relay journeys south fromUlan-Ude toListvyanka on Saturday.Listvyanka stretches approximately three miles along theshore of Lake Baikal; it is the most voluminous freshwater lake in the world.Sochi 2014 says that every spring, an "ice town" is built on Lake Baikal. The "ice town" includes a cafe made of ice, sculptures, and a rink.
R-Sport says the Olympic torch will take a dive into the waters of Lake Baikal on Saturday.
On Sunday, the flame will arrive inIrkutsk. Olympic boxerAlbert Pakeev hails from this city.
Overall, 14,000 runners will carry the torch across a total distance of 38,525 miles.The flame is touring 83 towns and cities before heading back into European Russia, and ultimately Sochi, for the 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony on February 7.
