The Olympic Truce, established in 9th Century BC, provided a period during which the athletes, pilgrims, artists and their families could travel in safety to participate in or attend the Olympic Games and return afterwards to their respective countries. The IOC in 1992 revived the concept, calling on the international community to observe the Olympic Truce. The first UN General Assembly resolution on this subject was introduced by Egypt on behalf of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). Since 1994 it has been run by the country hosting the next Olympics. The resolution is biennial, preceding both the Winter and Summer Games. As the host of the next Olympic and Paralympic Games in London 2012, the UK will run the resolution in the upcoming session of the General Assembly.
The truce resolution is now called "Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal" and it highlights how sport can promote peace and development worldwide.
Sebastian Coe, the double Olympic Gold medallist and chair of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games will table the Olympics Truce resolution on 17 October 2011 on behalf of the UK. It is hoped that the resolution will be co-sponsored by every single member state of the United Nations. So far, the following states have signed up:
