TOP sponsor McDonald’s will open at least 125 new restaurants in China in 2008, says CEO of McDonald’s China Jeff Schwartz in an interview with Guangzhou media.

Roughly half will be drive-thrus. Some of those will be co-owned by Sinopec under a joint venture deal signed between the two companies in 2006, though McDonald’s has other alliance partners for some outlets.

Four Games-themed restaurantswill be built in Beijing for the Games. In the athletes village, McDonald's will offer free meals to athletes and coaches.

Torch Sponsor Ads in NK

The North Korea Olympic Committee, the Pyongyang People’s Committee and BOCOG have signed an agreement to allow Torch Relay Presenting Partners to display advertisements when the flame goes through the capital, Chinese media report.

Samsung, Coca-Cola and Lenovo will be able to advertise their products on cars and distribute pamphlets discussing their company histories, according to the report.

Gucci Designs for the Games

Luxury clothing company Gucci has created a collection of eight accessories to commemorate the Beijing Games. A Gucci, like the IOC, is fiercely protective of the value of its logos and symbols. But the other pieces in the 8-8-2008 Limited Edition line – including a bag and sneakers – will be available only on the mainland, Hong Kong and Macau.

But without an official Olympic partnership, the Gucci designs cannot use Games signs and symbols.

According to the 2006 Annual Report from PPR – the Gucci Group’s parent – China is “the priority growth area” for its stable of luxury brands. Gucci revenue in the mainland plus Hong Kong grew 68.9 percent in 2006, the report also says.
