WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Olympic Committee announced today that Samsung will serve as the presenting sponsor of the 2012 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships, Feb. 10-12, 2012, at The Home Depot Center Velodrome in Carson, Calif.
"It's wonderful to see Samsung once again demonstrate their commitment for the Olympic and Paralympic Movements by signing on to sponsor the 2012 World Championships," said USOC Chief of ParalympicsCharlie Huebner. "I have no doubt the Los Angeles area will embrace this competition and support all of the athletes as they work toward the 2012 Paralympic Games in London."
The announcement was made at the USOC's "Ride with Heroes" cycling event in Washington, D.C. The event, held in collaboration with the Congressional Olympic and Paralympic Caucus, highlighted USOC programs which inspire excellence, promote fitness and support our active military and veterans.

The competition will welcome approximately 230 athletes from 30 countries and will also serve as the final qualifying event for U.S. athletes to be nominated to the 2012 U.S. Paralympic Cycling Team that will compete at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. U.S. athletes expected to compete includeAllison Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo.),Greta Neimanas (Chicago, Ill.),Clark Rachfal (Annapolis, Md.),Jennifer Schuble (Houston, Texas),Aaron Trent (Columbia, S.C.),Karissa Whisell (Eugene, Ore.) andMcKenzie Woodring (Grand Rapids, Mich.).
The local organizing committee for the 2012 event is the Los Angeles Velodrome Racing Association (LAVRA). The 2012 championship marks the first time since 1998 and just the second time ever that the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships will be held in the United States. Previous UCI events to take place in the U.S. include the 2005 UCI Junior World Championships and 2004 UCI Elite World Championships, both held at The Home Depot Center, and the 1998 UCI Para-cycling Road and Track World Championships which was hosted in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Home Depot Center Velodrome, a national training center for USA Cycling, is the first and only permanent indoor track of international standard in North America. The track measures at 250 meters in circumference, 7 meters in width, and inclines at 45 degrees on both ends. With 2,450 seats, hundreds of fans will get the chance to cheer on Team USA throughout the event.
The 2011 UCI Para-Cycling Track World Championships was held March 11-13 in Montichiari, Italy, and Team USA finished fifth in the overall medal count with six total medals. Winning gold for the U.S. was Jones, who won the women's 3km pursuit, C2. Earning silver in the 3km pursuit, C2, and 1000m TT, C5, respectively, were Niemanas andVincent Juarez (San Jose, Calif.). Schuble was a double bronze medalist for Team USA, earning third place in the 3km pursuit, C5, and 500m TT, C5.
