The International Rugby Board’s Game Analysis Unit has published a detailed statistical playing analysis of Rugby World Cup Sevens 2009.

The historic tournament, played over three days in Dubai in March, was the most successful Rugby World Cup Sevens event to date, shattering all previous broadcast records and featuring a 16-team women’s competition for the first time.

The detailed 38 page report features detailed analysis of the women’s and the men’s tournaments, identifying trends across the 98-match event, highlighting the significant advances made in competition in Rugby Sevens since Rugby World Cup Sevens 2005 and revealing how Wales lifted the coveted Melrose Cup and how Australia became the inaugural Women’s Rugby World Cup Sevens Champions.

“Rugby World Cup Sevens 2009 was a historical occasion bringing together 40 teams and 400 players from 31 countries for three days of compelling Rugby Sevens,” said IRB Chairman Bernard Lapasset.

“The tournament clearly demonstrated how Rugby Sevens continues to reach out to new young audiences around the world with record broadcast figures.”

"Rugby World Cup Sevens also reflected the increased standard in competition across the two tournaments with all four quarter-finals in the men’s competition providing upsets, while the excellent performances of Brazil, China, Thailand and Uganda highlighted the universality of the Women’s Game,” added Lapasset.
