The 16th Asian Games (www.gz2010.cn/en), part of the worldwide Olympic movement and governed bythe Olympic Council of Asia is pleased to present this preview of the all-new new andrenovated venues currently under construction for the Games.
Architectural work is being spearheaded by Pan Yong, Deputy General Architect (and associate Lin Dongna) of the Guangdong Architectural Design and Research Institute andSun Yimin, Deputy Director of the School of Architecture of SouthChina University of Technology.
The brand new venues being built for the Games, as well as its design and construction, have taken into consideration not only the requirements of competition at The 16th AsianGames but also the urban development of Guangzhou with emphasis of blending these new facilities into the surrounding environment, the utilization of new technologiesand embodiment of the Chinese Lingnan culture.

Among these venues, the above-ground structural engineering of the AsianGames Town Gymnasium is in full swing with concrete structural construction ofthe Guangdong Olympic Aquatics Centre at the Guangdong Olympic Sports Centre isnow close to completion and the Nansha Gymnasium is nearly topped off.
The new Tennis Centre at the eastern end of Guangzhou and buttresses a mountainside nearOlympic Stadium, has been completed and is currently being extensivelylandscaped to mirror the stadium with the local natural wooded surroundings,similar to Stone Mountain Tennis Centre used for the 1996 Atlanta SummerOlympic Games.
The AsianGames Town Gymnasium includes venues for Gymnastics, Cue Sports and Squash andwill be home to the Guangzhou Asian Games History Museum. This new Gymnasium will be transformed into acommunity centre offering sports, commercial and public services to residentsafter the Asian Games.
Apart fromusing flowing curves of the lingnan architectural style, the Asian Games TownGymnasium boasts another feature - energy saving and environmentally friendlymaterials and structure.
The Guangzhou Velodrome will host Cycling, Roller Sports and Extreme Sports.Inspired by the typical Lingnan street with Qilou buildings, designers haveadded verandas on the east and west sides of the Velodrome as rain shelters.
The Guangdong Olympic Aquatics Centre in the Guangdong Olympic Sports Centre willbe the main venue for the Asian Games' Aquatics as well as the Swimming andDiving competition of the Modern Pentathlon. It will use white and blue as its primary colors to represent the Baiyun (White Cloud) Mountain and Guangzhou's world-famous Pearl River ... and in keeping with the ocean culture of Guangdong, Nansha Gymnasium, the venue for Wushu, is being built in the shape of a dynamic conch.
