Nanjing, China - Chungwon Choue, who was re-elected to serve a fourth term as President of the World Taekwondo Federation at the WTF's General Assembly in Puebla, Mexico last month, attended the Opening Ceremony of the second edition of the Asian Youth Games staged at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium tonight.
The Asian Youth Games, an OCA (Olympic Council of Asia) multi-sports event held every four years, will feature 16 sports, including taekwondo.
29 taekwondo athletes from 16 countries are due to compete next week. The Women -47kg and Men -53kg categories will be held on Wednesday 21 August and Women -55kg and Men -62kg categories on Thursday 22 August.
Both days will be followed by medals ceremonies. In total, there will be 15 males and 14 female taekwondo athletes from Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and United Arab Emirates.
Taekwondo will be staged at the 3000 seat Longjiang Gymnasium, along with judo.
President Choue expressed his support to the young taekwondo athletes ready to compete at the event:
"I was hugely impressed by the quality of this great Opening Ceremony. I am delighted to be here to cheer on these youth of Asia. I fully support this event which enhances communications and exchanges between the young people from different countries and regions of Asia, promotes the Olympic spirit among the Asian youth and encourages them to be more actively engaged in sports.
"I am particularly proud of the 29 taekwondo athletes for their determination and their hard work. I hope their great potential will be fulfilled.
"We had an amazing World Championships in Puebla, Mexico, last month, with 1,500 athletes, and taekwondo is ready to shine again at this event."
In preparation for the 2nd Asian Youth Games, the OCA-WTF Taekwondo Youth Camp was held in Bangkok, Thailand, hosted by the Taekwondo Association of Thailand July 27 – August 10 this summer. At the camp of nearly 100 participants from 32 nations, Asian National Olympic Committees and Taekwondo associations were invited to send one male and one female athlete, and one coach. Also in attendance at the camp were Taekwondo expert coaches, Taekwondo Olympic Champions of Asia, as well as representatives from Asia of the Olympic Values and Education Program (OVEP) and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
In June, the President of the Olympic Council of Asia, HE Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah, told a news conference in Incheon that the OCA was proud of its wide portfolio of events and that the various multi-sport games were achieving their goals. He added that taekwondo is an integral part of the programme.
