Bangkok; 8 November 2014: Secretary General of the Turkish Olympic Committee (TOC), Neşe Gündoğan, was today announced as the female representative for Europe on the ANOC Executive Council at the ANOC General Assembly in Bangkok, Thailand – adding to her credentials as a leading figure in the Olympic Movement.
ANOC has implemented a new article in its Constitution to ensure that each Continental Association has at least one female representative on the ANOC Executive Council. Neşe Gündoğan was the first female Turkish Olympic Committee member to be elected to the TOC Executive Committee in 2001 and was appointed as the Olympic Committee’s Secretary General in 2003. She has acted as the official for the Turkish Olympic teams at every Summer Olympic Games since Sydney 2000 and every Olympic Winter Games since Torino 2006. Her respected influence has seen her elected onto the Executive Committee of the International Committee of Mediterranean Games (ICMG) in 2013 and to the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Women and Sport Commission in 2014. She also serves as a key member of the Baku 2015 European Games Coordination Commission.
Speaking about her appointment onto the ANOC Executive Council, Neşe Gündoğan said:
"I am absolutely thrilled to have been elected as the female representative for Europe on this highly influential Council. I am passionate about the good that we can all bring to world sport and to encourage participation in every single nation. This General Assembly has been an opportunity for much important discussion concerning the future of the NOC family and how we can provide the best conditions for athletes and future athletes all over the world. I am delighted to be representing women and representing Europe on this Council and look forward to a lot of hard but very rewarding work in the coming years."
Ms Gündoğan has published articles on women and sport in Turkey and the benefits of hosting an Olympic Games and has tirelessly worked to ensure the development of women athletes, coaches and officials in Turkish sport. She also serves at the Turkish Athletics Foundation to increase the participation of children and youth in athletics.
