NBC’s Paralympic Sponsor Fatigue

NBC attributes lack of coverage for the Paralympics to "sponsor fatigue."

The network suggested that more time be added between the Olympics and Paralympics to retain viewers as well as attract more sponsors and advertisers.

"As an event its positioning, one or two weeks after the Olympics, is difficult as there is a tremendous amount of fatigue," said NBC Olympics president Gary Zenkel, who spoke Friday in London on a panel organized by the Royal Television Society.

"Commercial support is very difficult. It is also fatigued and very difficult to re-engage the sponsor base to support the coverage. We respect and believe in the power of the [Paralympics] and how it can inspire. We'd love to do more."

NBC broadcast no live coverage of the Paralympics and only 5.5 hours of highlights on the NBC Sports Network. NBC also broadcast daily highlights on YouTube after each competition day.

The reigning La Liga champs announced the renewal in their annual financial report published this week.

Reports in Spanish media suggest the new deal – good through the end of the 2019/2020 season – is worth around $41.15 million a year.

The relationship between Real Madrid and the German sportswear manufacturer dates back to 1998.

Also in the financial report, club ownership revealed a seven percent increase in income from football activities – not including transfer revenues – for a total of $662 million last season.

Debt sits at $162 million and the 2012/2013 budget at $666 million.

Samsung’s Viral Marketing

Olympic sponsor Samsung’s viral video campaign was the most watched video the week of Apple’s iPhone 5 release.

The campaign entitled "The Next Best Thing is Already Here" lightheartedly poked fun at Apple users waiting for the new release.

Apple countered with a seven minute video giving instructions for the iPhone 5 and outlying its new features.

Samsung’s video garnered 13.2 views, moving from number 5 to number 1 on the viral video charts despite the video being three weeks old.

Samsung’s Galaxy S3 was released in June, and the "Next Best Thing" campaign has received 26 million views so far.
