(ATR) World Archery announced Friday that it has awarded the 2015 World Cup Final and the 2017 World Championships to Mexico City.
This is the first time Mexico has hosted the World Championships and the second time the country has hosted the Archery World Cup Final. In 2006, Mexico staged the World Cup Final in the Mayapan Pyramids.
World Archery says Mexico has developed into a "key market" for international archery following the team's success at the 2012 London Olympics.
The federation hopes that next year's World Cup Final, the 2017 World Championships, and "community engagement programs" will expand archery's already growing popularity in Mexico City.
Mexico City mayor Miguel Angel Mancera and director of sport Horacio De La Vega played a significant role in the city's "strong bid" for the two elite archery events, according to World Archery.
The Mexican Challenge in 2013 also added to Mexico City's candidature. The event pitted eight top archers from Mexico against eight international archers.
World Archery secretary general Tom Dielen says the Mexican Challenge proved "this organizing committee shares our values of putting athletes at the heart of international archery competition.
"We are confident it will build on that success with two of World Archery’s flagship tournaments."
This year's Archery World Cup final is set to be hosted September 5 through September 7 in Lausanne, Switzerland.
