The Hall of Fame of the Brazilian Olympic Committee will have ten new members in 2019: Chiaki Ishii, the first Olympic judo Brazilian medalist in Munich 1972; Hortencia and Paula, world basketball champions in 1994 and Olympic silver in Atlanta 1996; Joaquim Cruz, Olympic champion of athletics in the 800m in Los Angeles 1984 and Olympic silver in the 800m in Seoul 1988; the deceased Guilherme Paraense (sports shooting), Brazil's first Olympic gold medal in the history of the Olympic Games (Antwerp 1920); João do Pulo, twice Olympic bronze medalist in athletics; Maria Lenk (swimming), the first South American woman to compete in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1932; Sylvio Magalhães Padilha, the first South American to compete for an Olympic final in athletics in Berlin in 1936; and volleyball coaches Bernardinho, two-time Olympic champion; and José Roberto Guimarães, three-time Olympic champion.

"The COB Hall of Fame aims to perpetuate the athletes and coaches who helped build our Olympic history. I am sure that the history of these great characters in the sport will be an inspiration for new generations ", says COB Chairman Paulo Wanderley Teixeira, who complements. "The tributes will be on display at Brazil Team Training Center, the future administrative headquarters of the COB, in a space open to public visitation. But before, we will do the solemnity of recording the molds next to the society, in events throughout the year 2019, as a way to value these heroes even more. "

The ten idols of the national sport will leave their marks eternalized in molds of hands or feet, as well as images of faces of posthumous honorees, in events such as Olympic Day, a year commemoration for Tokyo 2020, the Youth School Games and the Prize Brazil Olympic or according to the affinity with the action and availability of presence. Subsequently, all memories will be displayed on a mural at the Brazil Team Training Center at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Park, in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro.

This year the COB received 23 nominations for the Hall of Fame, with only 17 being eligible for the rules of the award announcement. Participated in the selection process a commission composed of seven members of the board of COB; the two national representatives of the International Olympic Committee (IOC); two members of the Athletes Commission; and four of the COB Board of Directors. In order for the candidate to be elected, it was necessary to have at least 75% of the total votes of the members of the Evaluation Committee. The selected candidates passed in total for six polling rounds until the ten names were defined.

Conceived in 2018 by the COB to celebrate the achievements of the country's greatest athletes and coaches, who have contributed significantly to the Olympic sport, promoting Olympism and inspiring new generations, the Hall of Fame will honor 10 athletes annually.

"This is just the second selection of names for the Hall of Fame that intends, little by little, to fill this gap of recognition and appreciation of the Olympic history of the country. Soon I'm sure we will have been able to highlight the achievements and glories of the great Brazilian athletes and coaches, "commented the general director of COB, Rogério Sampaio, Olympic judo champion in Barcelona 92.

A virtual space within the COB's official website, with the profile of each of the honorees, achievements, photos and videos, including images from the day they left the mark, is also being created. In that space, the fans can leave messages to the idols. The videos of recording of the molds during the tributes can also be seen through the QR Code that each piece will receive before being exposed.

The Hall of Fame honored in its first edition, during the Brazilian Olympic Prize, in December 2018: Torben Grael, from candle, Brazil's largest Olympic medalist; the pair Sandra Pires and Jackie Silva, of beach volleyball, the first Brazilians to win gold medals in the Games; and marathon runner Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima, the only Brazilian to receive the Pierre de Coubertin medal, the highest honor of the Olympic Movement.
