Dortmund will host the 2011 European wrestling Championships and what better way to prepare yourself for hosting such an event than to visit another event organiser. Therefore a delegation of 5 German is visiting the city of Herning during the World Wrestling Championships taking place in Herning, Denmark from 21 through 27 September 2009.
“We are in Herning to have a look around, get ideas and gain some experience for our own championships in 2 years time. Dortmund has for the last 7 years been hosting an international tournament – the Grand Prix – so we have some experience in the field,” says Cathrin Stiegler, who is in charge of the international affairs in the German Wrestling Federation.
The german delegation will be staying in Herning all week. And they are getting busy trying to get a good view of everything happening during the event.
“We have been taking a lot of notes already. Among the things we have noted is the size of the venue. Everything is so big – press centre, accreditation, and so on – is very spacious, and that is a good thing. So even though the European Championships is a somewhat smaller event than this World Championship, there is a lot we can take with us home. Another example is the fanzone and the youth camp which is a new idea, and we are definitely going to do the same in Dortmund in 2011,” says Karl-Martin Dittmann, Secretary General of the German Wrestling Federation
Approximately 500 German wrestling fans have found their way to Denmark, and the German delegation also hope they can use this trip to market the upcoming European Championship for a group of potential spectators.
The Germans and the Danes have worked together for several years already. Before the current World Championships the Danish organisers visited the German Grand Prix also to gain inspiration.
The World Wrestling Championships 2009 is among the biggest sport events taking place in Denmark ever. 74 nations – approximately 900 athletes – are participating.
Danish Year of Sport 2009
In 2009 more than 50 major international sports events are taking place all over Denmark, including the IOC Olympic Session and the Olympic Congress. The World Taekwondo Championships, the UEFA Congress, the World Wrestling Championships and the World Men’s Team Squash Championships are also among the many events taking place in Denmark.
Due to the many events the Danish Government has appointed the year 2009 as the Danish Year of Sport. The Year of Sport is part of a national effort to realise a vision of the Danish Government: to place Denmark firmly as one of Europe’s leading hosts of major international sports events and congresses.
