(ATR) The national Olympic committee for Germany has taken the first steps towards a bid from Munich for the 2018 Winter Olympics, at the same time rejecting Berlin and Hamburg as possible bidders for the 2020 Summer Games.

Meeting in Frankfurt, the executive committee of the DOSB, headed by President Thomas Bach, has given initial approval to a bid from Munich for 2018.

“We want to bring the Olympics to Germany,” Bach said, adding however that decision on Munich is not final.

Whether the plans move ahead will depend on a vote in December at the annual assembly of the DOSB, which has more than 300 voting delegates.

The bid from Munich would include all the ice events in the city, with alpine events at Garmisch Partenkirchen, about 90 minutes from the city. Along with alpine venues, the area in southern Bavaria includes the ski jumps The 1972 Olympic Stadium would host events for a Munich Winter Games. needed for the Games.

The existing sliding track at Koenigssee, which figured into Salzburg’s past bids for the Games, would be part of the Munich bid.

The stadium from the 1972 Summer Games would be used for open and closing ceremonies and perhaps the sprint events in cross country skiing. If Munich is successful, the city would become the first to hold both editions of the Games.

Bach estimates the cost of a bid from Munich will reach 25 to 35 million euros.

In choosing to consider a winter bid, the DOSB leadership categorically ruled out the potential of bids for the 2020 Summer Olympics from Hamburg or Berlin.

“We are disappointed, but we accept the decision to seek the Games for Munich,” says Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit.

“Berlin was fit for the Olympics, but a bid is finished,” he said.

German sport and political leaders have mentioned the possibility of a bid from Munich for the Winter Games, but they have been forced to wait until Salzburg’s fate for the 2014 Olympics was decided.

So far, the only certain 2018 winter bid is coming from Tromsoe, Norway. A new bid from Korea and one from China could be in the works.
