In the ACRio Hospitality Houses 2016 Awards announced this Wednesday, the House of Hungary has been recognized as the most innovative national house at the recent Rio Olympic Games.

The winners were chosen from the many national hospitality houses with a presence in Rio, as well as sponsor and federation houses. The other two national house winners were Switzerland and Qatar (taking awards for Friendship and Cultural Promotion respectively).

The innovations and interactive displays at the House of Hungary proved to be very popular with nearly 20,000 visitors, athletes and fans from all over the world. Among them, the "walk the wall" feature attracted particular interest, especially from aspiring young athletes in the crowds. This exhibition shone the spotlight on each Olympic medal won by a Hungarian, along with brief histories and exceptional sporting highlights.

The House of Hungary was created around a water theme by a team of young Hungarian designers. It included a high-tech, walk-on-water experience, a freshwater Danube river feature, and an Aqua Bar serving 17 different types of mineral water (including six medicinal). Another landmark feature at the House was the giant Rubik’s Cube with a cultural display tucked inside.

"On behalf of the House of Hungary team, the National Olympic Committee and the designers I’d like to say how delighted we are by this award," said Balázs Fürjes, Chairman of Budapest 2024, whose team had a presence at the House in line with IOC regulations. "Budapest is part of the UN Creative Cities Network, and our capital is characterised by a unique youthful playfulness. I think this imaginative spirit really shone through at our House. Thanks to our hosts in Rio for providing such a great opportunity for us to tell the world more about Hungary, whilst having great fun at the same time."

The Rio Olympic Games marked the first time that Hungary has hosted a national House, which was opened by the President of Hungary, János Áder. The House was also visited by the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, and the President of the IOC, Thomas Bach, to celebrate Hungary’s national day, St. Stephen’s Day, on the 20 August.
