Brazil, Japan, Italy and Mexico are in Group A. Spain, Uruguay, Tahiti and the African champion are in Group B
SAO PAULO - The groups of the Confederations Cup Brazil 2013 have been determined at FIFA’s official draw conducted today at the Anhembi Convention Center in São Paulo, Brazil. Brazil and Japan are in Group A and will play each other in the competition’s opening match on June 15, 2013 at 16.00 BRT at the National Mané Garrincha Stadium in Brasília. Italy and Mexico are the other two teams in Group A. Spain, Uruguay, Tahiti and the African champion make up Group B.
The draw, conducted by FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke, determined the groups as well as each team's position in the groups and schedule of play. Match time and venue were decided previously.
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff delivered a speech at the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013 draw and stated that in relation to the tournament Brazil is accountable twice: having to win both on and off the field.
"Our first responsibility is to show good football on the pitch, honoring the Brazilian tradition of having won five World Cups. But we also have to win the tournament off the pitch, building the necessary conditions to stage an unforgettable tournament, with top quality stadiums, organization and friendly hospitality offered to delegations and fans," she stated.
After the opening match in Brasília, Italy and Mexico face each other on June 16 in Rio de Janeiro. On the same day, Spain faces Uruguay in Recife. Tahiti and the African champion play the last match of the first round in Belo Horizonte.
Before the official draw, Brazil’s two-time World Cup winner Cafu unveiled the name of the match ball: Cafusa.
To date, over 130,000 tickets have been sold for the tournament. The second ticket sales period starts on Monday, December 3, 2012.
