Singapore,29 April 2009 – The Singapore Youth Olympic Games OrganisingCommittee (SYOGOC) confirmed the 18 competition venues for theinaugural Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games at a site visit toBishan Stadium today.
Thevisit was led by Mr Teo Ser Luck, Senior Parliamentary Secretary tothe Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports and theMinistry of Transport.
The18 venues, where 26 sports competition will be held, were determinedin consultation with the International Federations (IFs) and approvedby the International Olympic Committee (IOC). These are facilitiesowned by the Singapore Sports Council and other government agenciesas well as commercial entities.
“Singaporewon the bid to host the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) becauseit has right-sized and excellent facilities and infrastructure; nonew venues were purposely built for Singapore 2010. To meetcompetition requirements, we are upgrading the facilities with thesupport of venue owners,” said Mr Goh Kee Nguan, SYOGOC ChiefExecutive Officer.
MrGoh added, “Creative use of space in the Nanyang TechnologicalUniversity also allows us to locate the training venues for 13 sportswithin or near the Youth Olympic Village. We will continue to workclosely with the venue owners to prepare the facilities for thecompetition during YOG.”
SYOGOCis now in the operational planning phase from October 2008 toSeptember 2009 where it is translating the concept of Singapore 2010into detailed plans. In this phase, SYOGOC is also defining itsoperations strategy and developing the venue operations plan. Venueplanning is an essential step in the preparation for Singapore 2010,where various divisions overseeing different functional areas willcome together to carry out integrated planning for each venue.

Singaporewill be hosting the first Youth Olympic Games (YOG) from 14 to 26August 2010. It will receive some 3,600 athletes and 800 officialsfrom the 205 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), along with estimated800 media representatives, 20,000 local and international volunteers,and more than 500,000 spectators. Young athletes - aged between 14and 18 years – will compete in 26 sports and take part in Cultureand Education Programme.
