Coke Invests More in Brazil before World Cup, Olympics

TOP Sponsor Coca-Cola is set to invest nearly $5.8 billion in Brazil from 2010 to 2014 ahead of the World Cup, Olympics and Paralympics.

The company will see a 75 percent increase in its investments in the country. It invested $3.3 billion from 2005 to 2009.

“Brazil is one of the Coca-Cola Company’s top markets worldwide,” Coke Chief Executive Muhtar Kent said.

The company has increased its worldwide investments as the U.S. market weakens.

Coke is also opening a green plant in Fazenda Rio Grande, Brazil. The plant will produce about 11,000 tons of dried teas per year.

Visa’s Olympic Marketing Campaign Underway

TOP sponsor Visa launched its global Olympic Marketing Campaign, “Go World”, three months ahead of the 2010 Winter Olympics. The move followed the recent renewal of its Olympics sponsorship.

The campaign features television commercials in the U.S. advertises opportunities for consumers to win a trip for four to Vancouver when they use their Visa cards.

“To connect with Olympic fans globally, we’ve taken this platform and created a campaign that transcends borders, resonates with fans’ sense of national pride, builds our own business and that of our clients, and advances the spirit of the Olympic Movement,” Antonio Lucio, Chief Marketing Officer of Visa, said in a statement.

Parts of the campaign will be tweaked to suit audiences in Canada, Russia, Japan, Korea, China and Latin America.

The marketing campaign also includes a U.S. Go World Web site that will feature “Team Visa” athletes Julia Mancuso, Lindsey Jacobellis, Ryan St. Onge, Angela Ruggeiro and Alexi Salamone. “Team Visa” includes top athletes from the United States, Canada, Japan and Russia.

The Canada Go World Web site will feature 2010 athletes Emily Brydon, Clara Hughes, Albert Demchenko, Olga Zavyalova and several other athletes.

Visa recently renewed its sponsorship as a TOP sponsor of the Games and will continue through 2020.

Colbert Raises $200,000 for U.S. Speedskating in First Week

A week after Stephen Colbert, host of the “Colbert Report”, came to U.S. Speedskating’s rescue; the so-called Colbert Nation fundraiser has raised more than $200,000.

U.S. Speedskating faced a $350,000 deficit after its Dutch bank sponsor, DSB, filed for bankruptcy last month.

Colbert asked viewers to send donations to his website, www.colbertnation.com, earlier this month. An ad that asks viewers to “help them win gold” appears on the site and provides a link where donors can support U.S. Speedskating.

Colbert reported Monday that $202,000 had been donated in the first week and that he is the team’s new sponsor.

Some U.S. Speedskating athletes now wear skin suits with the Colbert Nation logo.

“The skaters are really pumped,” U.S. Speedskating Executive Director Bob Crowley said.

Samsung Launches Fan Contest

TOP sponsor Samsung is launching a contest giving Canadian fans the opportunity to attend the 2010 Olympics and share their experiences through Samsung’s Olympic website, personal blogs and social media accounts.

The Samsung Mobile Explorers online contest will select five teams of two people to attend the Games in Vancouver.

“This once-in-a-lifetime experience will put our Samsung Mobile Explorer teams front-and-center on the world’s biggest state,” President of Samsung Electronics Canada Benjamin Lee said.

The contest is part of Samsung’s Vancouver 2010 campaign. Canadian fans can enter at www.samsung.com/vancouver2010.

McDonald’s Comparable Sales Up

TOP Sponsor McDonald’s October global sales increased 3.3 percent thanks to strong sales in Europe.

Europe saw an increase of 6.4 percent, while Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa were up 4.7 percent. Comparable sales in the U.S. were comparatively flat dropping 0.1 percent.

Europe saw its increase because of its premium menu options, well-known McDonald’s items and an expanding value menu.
