SANTIAGO, CHILE (December 18, 2018) – The Santiago 2023 Pan American Games Organizing Committee was chosen several weeks ago, however, it was the Chilean president, Sebastian Piñera, who would announce the news publicly to the media and the continent.
The highest sports authorities were called together at La Moneda Palace, including Panam Sports President, Neven Ilic, for the announcement of the nine professionals who will work tirelessly to deliver the mega sporting event.
The Santiago 2023 Organizing Committee’s chosen leaders are the following:
Fernando Gonzalez – Former tennis player, three-time Olympic medalist
Federico Valdes - Director of the University of Development in Chile
Miguel Angel Mujica – President of the Chilean Olympic Committee
Aquiles Gomez – Vice President of the Chilean Olympic Committee
Alberto Vargas – Secretary General of the Paralympic Committee of Chile
Soledad Bacarreza – Director of the School of Sport at the AIEP Professional Institute
Pamela Camus – Member of the International Women Forum (IWF)
Cristian Aubert – Former General Manager of Azul Azul
Karl Samsing – Businessman, Former National Skier
"We are kicking off the Santiago 2023 Organizing Committee, the people in charge of organizing our Pan American Games. We are extremely happy because this is the most important event that we have ever hosted in our country and it calls for everyone’s effort," said Chilean Sports Minister, Pauline Kantor.
Fernando Gonzalez, Head of the Santiago 2023 Organizing Committee and three-time Olympic Medalist in Athens 2004, and Beijing 2008, was emphatic in pointing out that: "I am extremely happy and proud for these Games to be realized here in Chile. We are a team who loves sports and we will give our all for the Games to be held in the best way possible."
Neven Ilic, Panam Sports President, was also at La Moneda Palace as a special guest invited by President Sebastian Piñera. At the end of the ceremony, he mentioned that "I am delighted that they have selected the Organizing Committee. The people who have been chosen are great professionals full of sports knowledge and of course I wish them nothing but success on this great challenge. As Panam Sports, we will help in any way we can."
