(ATR)The International Association of Athletics Federations is holding its world congress, Aug. 17-20, in Beijing ahead of the 2015 World Championships.

The IAAF will elect a new president on Aug. 19. Ukrainian pole vaulter Sergey Bubka and British track and field athleteSebastian Coe are the only two candidates in the race for the IAAF hot seat.

The 2015 World Championships open on Aug. 22 in Beijing. Organizers say that this marks the largest sporting event to take place at the Beijing National Stadium since the 2008 Olympics.

Athletes from around 59 countries will compete at the worlds next week. Competition ends on Aug. 30.

Coates checking in on Tokyo Stadium

IOC vice president John Coates will be in Tokyo to check in on planning for the new national stadium in the coming weeks.

Financial figures for the stadium, which will host events for the 2020 Summer Olympics including the opening and closing ceremonies, are set to be released in a few weeks time.

A portion of the proposed 80,000 seats will be temporary. The government confirmed that control of the stadium would be handed over to a private venue management company after the Tokyo Games.

Coates toldATRlast week that the aim was to tender a design by the end of this year. The organizing committee wants to begin construction in the first quarter of 2016.

Equestrian European Championships

The International Equestrian Federation's 2015 European Championships are underway in Aachen, Germany.

The program for the European Championships includes events in jumping, dressage, reigning, driving, and vaulting.

Organizers say that approximately 420 riders, drivers and vaulters, and 720 horses, from 40 countries are competing at the championships.

Competition ends on Aug. 23.

International Dragon Boat Fed in Canada

The International Dragon Boat Federation is organizing two events in the Welland-Niagara region of Canada this week.

The 12th edition of the World Dragon Boat Racing Championships open on Aug. 19 and close on Aug. 23.

The event will attract about 2,500 participants from across the world.

Delegates from the following countries will compete at the championships:Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Czech Republic, Germany, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Macau, Puerto Rico, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, and the United States

The IDBF will hold its congress and elections for new leaders on Aug. 24.
