Today at CES 2019, Alibaba and Intel jointly announced plans to develop the first-ever, AI-powered 3D athlete tracking technology for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and beyond. The partnership looks to provide athletes with new training data and analysis while elevating the viewing experience for fans around the world.
Powered by Alibaba’s cloud computing capability as well as Intel’s hardware and deep-learning algorithms, the 3D Athlete Tracking Technology will utilize regular video cameras – not special sensors – to create a 3D "mesh" that allows coaches and trainers to analyze intricate, real-time, biomechanical data of an athlete’s movements. Using AI and a highly accurate digital model of the action, coaches and trainers will be able to help athletes modify and enhance their training to ultimately improve their performance. In addition to benefits for athletes, the technology will give fans insights into how world-class athletes perform. For example, broadcasters will be able to analyze, dissect and re-examine highlights during instant replays at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Alibaba’s collaboration with Intel marks our latest initiative to transform the Olympic Games for the digital era. In December, Alibaba and the IOC launched the first-ever online Olympic store on Alibaba’s Tmall platform for Chinese fans. In September, Alibaba and Olympic Broadcasting Serviceslaunched OBS Cloud - a ground-breaking broadcasting platform (operating entirely on the cloud) to support the heavy content production and delivery workflows experienced by Rights Holding Broadcasters covering the Games.
